Whether you are starting from scratch or already have experience training dogs, you're about to learn the Step-by-Step techniques to naturally turn you into a Dog Training Pro in just days.
The methods on this site have been proven through years and years of dog training.
What's even better is that they're easy to learn! You'll find these techniques to be effective without overcomplicating the training process.
With so much dog training misinformation circulating on the web, this site has condensed the most important and effective training techniques for your convenience.
Here's a word to the wise...
Keep in mind that you must be consistent with your training. It doesn't happen overnight, but with practice, your dog will know exactly what you expect of him.
With that said, let's get right to it!
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Let me just clarify some of the common mistakes you may be making in training your dog.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not pointing fingers here. But if you're accidentally contributing to these dog training pitfalls, you'll find this info EXTREMELY important.
Avoiding the habits listed below could save you thousands of dollars trying to rehabilitate an anxious or confused pet.
Negative Reinforcement is NOT Cool!
If your dog misbehaves in front of you, a stern "No" will usually let him know he's crossed the line.
It astounds me how many people use negative reinforcement with their pets and are then shocked later on when their dog bites someone or develops territorial aggressive behavior.
When I say negative reinforcement, I'm talking about going beyond the "No" trigger command and going so far as to hit your dog with a newspaper or even scream at your dog.
Negative reinforcement means only telling your dog when he is bad as opposed to praising him when he does the right thing. It can also mean scaring your dog into doing what you want. This tactic will only give you a shy, scared and defensive dog.
There are no gains to negative reinforcement. Telling your dog ONLY when he is bad will make him anxious and unsure. This fear will ultimately lead to social anxiety and initial aggressiveness towards others.
The power truly lies in positive reinforcement. Telling your dog when he is being good, at the right times, will increase his respect for you and he will begin to follow you as pack leader.
Dogs naturally follow a pack mentality and will look to either step up and become the pack leader or follow your command and be submissive to your wishes. It is your job to convince him that YOU are the Alpha dog and he will want to listen to your command.
That's essentially the whole point of Dog Training. You need to execute the strategies taught here to convince your dog that YOU are the pack leader.
The proper way to use Positive Reinforcement
It is SO important to use positive reinforcement when training your dog. The two most important trigger commands that you'll want to add to your vocabulary are "Good Boy" and "No".
It may sound simple enough, but using these trigger commands improperly will confuse your dog. He won't be able to know the difference between good behavior and bad behavior.
Example: Your dog is becoming overprotective of his favorite toy or his food bowl and he growls at you every time you come too close. As an attempt to soothe him, you quietly wander over and begin to pet him saying "Good Boy". This is a HUGE mistake.
You're dog interprets this as "Good Growling" and will continue to exemplify this behavior. "Good Boy" is directly translated into an approval trigger command. Be wary how you use it. It is a powerful tool and you build up a history of understanding in your dog's head every time you use it correctly or incorrectly.
Tone of Voice
A big mistake many dog owners make is not paying enough attention to their tone of voice. Remember, your dog doesn't understand words. He will recognize your commands by the tone of your voice.
The "No" command should be given in a deep, authoritative voice whereas the "Goodboy" command should be given in a lighthearted, happy sounding voice. It may sound like common sense advice, but you'd be surprised how many dog owners overlook the consistency of their tone.
Building Trust
Often I hear people complain that when they call their dog, it's hit or miss. "Sometimes my dog comes, sometimes he just ignores me." This is directly related to the way trust is built with your dog.
For example, when you're in the dog park and your dog is having fun, do you call him over only to put a leash on him and take him home?
Or maybe your dog is in the yard, running around and playing. Do you only call him to take him inside, clip his nails, brush his teeth or clean his ears?
These habits will make your dog start to associate you calling him with then end to his fun time.
Instead, call your dog over periodically and give him treats. Then tell him "Go Play". Your dog will interpret this as positive reinforcement to his good time and he will trust that when you call him, it is for reward and not punishment.
